Morningstar
has been kind enough to grant me a 'mini-interview'.
Christine:
1)
In your opinion what was the hardest thing to accomplish: getting signed or getting residency at TAO?
MORNINGSTAR:
Well, Low Records is actually something my brother and I are in the process of starting, so my answer might be biased as I haven't really tried or put my efforts into getting signed by an existing Label, also, I've been putting most of my efforts into DJ'ing. I'd say given the same efforts, they may be equal, although perhaps getting a residency at Tao might be akin to getting signed to a major-Indie or possibly even Major Label in ones respective field. getting a residency at Tao seemed nearly impossible when I first moved to Vegas (less than a year ago), when I was trying to get the Music Directors attention. However, besides building my resume up, an ex-entertainment director at Krave ended up working at Tao, and introduced me to the right people, who gave me an opportunity to wow 'em, and fortunately, I've succeeded thus far!
Christine:
2) how hard is it traveling back and forth from LA to Vegas each week on top of occasionally touring as well?
MORNINGSTAR:
It's pretty rough, I've gotten used to it, but it's not easy. It takes damn dedication towards wanting to excell in my career. Every time I think of all the reasons why it isn't very smart, easy, etc. I just realize "this is what I've chosen I want to do, so if I wanna get to the top, I need to dedicate everything I've got to it and pull nothing back".
Christine:
3) Any advice for dj's who want to start out? Should they concentrate on creating their own music first and remixing other artists or should they start out djing?
MORNINGSTAR:
Personally, I'd say no. I had a bunch of DJ's giving me that advice when I started......Producing definitely DOES improve ones knowledge of mixing, music, understanding, etc. and earns you credit and respect......But if you want to make it as DJ, I personally think to just work your ass off in that field 'till you get in the door, establish yourself, then start focusing on Producing, etc. as time allows, and as the DJ'ing starts flowing smoothly. I've produced my own tracks during leisure time, however I myself haven't even gotten to sitting down and doing a remix yet......It's actually next on my "to-do List", haha.
Christine:
4)
Your music lists are so damn hot and in several well incorporated categories.
Have you ever considered being a consultant to program directors of satellite radio, or to podcast, or to dj on the radio?
MORNINGSTAR:
I've thought about it and would certainly love to do it, I had Q-Vegas approach me to do their first Top-10 List, which was cool, however I haven't really gotten myself to get in touch with the right people to do more things higher in that field, such as being a consultant....It would definitely be something I'd like to do.......Any ideas on who to talk to?? haha.
You can catch Morningstar @ Krave and Tao in Las Vegas
and Arena in Los Angeles.
Please check Morningstars MySpace page for music on the player and dj gigs/dates.
Hustle & Flow
John Singleton mortgaged his home to make Hustle & Flow.
MTV & Paramount got on board. Craig Brown wrote & directed Hustle & Flow.
Terrence Howard plays DJ a pimp turned rapper. Taraji Henson plays 'Sug', a pregnant
prostitute, girlfriend of DJ and good luck charm turned vocalist. Taryn Manning
plays Nola, a prostitute, friend of DJ who 'grows up' to be his promoter.
Anthony Anderson plays a dj (turntablist) tuned music producer and record label owner.
Ludacris plays a corrupt rap superstar who forgot his music's roots.
And forgive me for not being 100% on this but a guy who looks like A. Broody
is the white, 'beats maker' and keyboard player. Hustle and Flow makes you want to
memorize the words, buy the soundtrack, watch the movie over and over again and write a
review! The film spells out how to translate into music the struggles in life with passion.
The victory over struggle and personal growth can be felt by the viewer. Even
Sugs baby becomes one of your own. The video store doesn't have enough copies of

DJ Miss Joy
has recently been gracious to kindly grant me an interview.
Christine:
1)
I would like to know what you see as the hardest thing for female dj's in this industry.
Miss Joy:
1.
the hardest thing for a female in this industry is for men to take us seriously... we have to work 10 times harder to prove ourselves as good technical djs...
Christine:
you host events and allow up and coming dj's to spin with you.
2) What skills/ attributes are you looking for in dj's
if they are looking to get booked here in Las Vegas?
Miss Joy:
... I look for honest djs that would give me their word that they are a good credible technical dj. Regardless of their genre, I enjoy all styles. I look for djs who are hungry and willing to promote themselves and the event to spread good positive energy and vibes for electronic music scene.
my future plans for an all female dj lineup is in the works--- the process is still going,
also, do a charity event on a more mainstream level, hopefully with the help of lady miss Christine Justice :)

Barry Manilow
Barry Manilow is enjoying the beginning of his second year at the Hilton.
He's performing on the same stage that had Elvis, Frank Sinatra, & Sammy Davis Jr.
Barry Manilow was so elegant, graceful and wonderful.
I cried. I danced. I sang along. I remembered my first make-out
session with a nice jewish boy during winter break down in Florida
to "Mandy" by Barry Manilow. I highly recommend seeing
Barry Manilow while visiting fabulous Las Vegas. The man asks the audience
to please give the locals a tip while listening to them bang on the
ivories and belt their hearts out in the local bars. How
could you get any more humble?

Word! to recent graduates:
It's been a while since I graduated from High School.
So long in fact, that I feel a little old.
But one of my best friends,Dana, is like, almost thirteen years
younger than me. Age doesn't matter with friends.
We are going to the same college. The average age
in college these days is around 34-years-old.
Anyways,my friend Dana recently graduated from college.
I was so proud to cheer her on at the graduation ceremony.
I'm in the process of finishing a few associates degress on the way to
a bachelor degree and hopefully a masters degree. Women should focus on
being cooperative, open, being connected to others, and interdependent. They shouldn't worry about what other women are doing
to better themselves that could seem like competition. Or be "ageist". Your new best friend could
be 13 years older OR younger than you!
Being "like sisters" is
ideal these days. Right on! CJ;-)
